Fasting
Fasting is the voluntary act of abstaining from something for the purpose of growing in self-discipline. Why is this something that God asks of us? Can you call yourself a follower of Christ and never fast?
The few times I have practiced fasting I did not find it helpful in terms of spiritual growth or growth in self-discipline. I know that is because I had the wrong attitude about fasting. I did it legalistically. I felt like it was something I should do as a Christian. Also I did it thinking and expecting a reward. That somehow God would do what I wanted Him to if I fasted (even if it was something spiritual like drawing me closer to Him). I am praying that God would change my heart about it and teach me how to fast as He would have me.
